AboutFace Help & Support Home Page

To begin, select one of the following choices:

If you already have glossy photos of your employees...

If you already have a digital camera....

If you think you would like to try a digital camera...

If you already have a scanner and know how to use it...

If you have a scanner but don't really know how to use it...

If you're trying to decide whether to go with traditional or digital photography...

If you're trying to select a photographer, but don't know whom to call...

If you already have glossy photos of your employees, there are two ways to get those pictures into your directory:

  • Send your photos to AboutFace for scanning.  We will professionally scan your photos and insert them right into your directory.  The cost is just $5 per photo.  For more information on this service, please email us at sales@aboutface.com.

If you already have a digital camera, just follow these steps:

  1. Adjust the color/contrast of the photos, crop them to an appropriate size, and save them on your computer.

  2. Follow the instructions in the the AboutFace help system to insert your digital pictures into your directory.

If you think you would like to try a digital camera, here are some considerations:

  • Using a digital camera is significantly less expensive than traditional photography.

  • Using a digital camera is much quicker and gives you the flexibility to update pictures as often as you like.

  • Unless you hire a professional photographer, your digital photos will probably be of a lower quality than those shot by a pro using traditional photography.  However, they may be sufficient for these purposes -- it's your choice.

  • Professional photographers are experienced at taking large volumes of pictures quickly, and they will keep the process moving for you.  If you appoint an in-house digital photographer, that person should expect to spend a significant amount of time taking photos.

If you already have a scanner and know how to use it, just follow these steps:

  1. Scan the photos.

  2. Adjust the color/contrast of the photos, crop them to an appropriate size, and save them on your computer.

  3. Follow the instructions in the the AboutFace help system to insert the  digital picture files into your directory.

If you have a scanner but don't really know how to use it, you should do the following:

  • Make sure your scanner is capable of handling photographs.  (Some scanners, for example, are designed strictly for documents.)  If you call the manufacturer with your model number, they will be able to tell you.

  • Once your photos are scanned, follow the instructions, above, for inserting your newly-scanned photos into your directory.

If you're trying to decide whether to go with traditional or digital photography, you should consider the following:

  • Professional photographs will always give you the best-looking photographs.

  • Professional photographers know how to schedule a photo shoot for a large number of people and will keep things moving on schedule.

  • Professional digital photography, right now, is not any less expensive than professional traditional photography.  Thus, AboutFace recommends traditional photography, because of the flexibility it offers.  For example, you can order reprints to use for other purposes, especially marketing.

  • Appointing an in-house digital photographer is the cheapest, and in theory at least, the quickest way to take everyone's picture.  You should keep in mind, however, that the in-house photographer you appoint, needs to be aggressive about capturing everyone's picture.  The reality is that employees will tend to respect an appointment time with an outside photographer much more than they would a fellow employee-photographer.  This is, in fact, the biggest issue with in-house digital photographers.
